Earth Science Facts for Kids

  1. Contrary to popular belief, the Earth isn’t a sphere but an ovoid-shaped object. That’s because, despite its rounded shape, the planet is flattened at the poles.
  2. Earth rotates around its axis every 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds.
  3. Mars’s gravity is lower than Earth’s, making a 200-pound person weigh just 76 pounds on Mars.
  4. The best scientific guesses put the universe at 13.8 billion years. In contrast, the solar system is only 4.6 billion years old. Earth is slightly younger at around 4.54 billion years.
